History of Danbury

Danbury, located in Essex, England, has a rich history that spans thousands of years. Evidence of early settlement in the area dates back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, with various artefacts suggesting the region has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The name "Danbury" is thought to come from the Old English words "dene" (valley) and "burh" (fortified settlement), indicating its origins as a settlement in a valley near a fort.

During the Roman period, Danbury was part of the territory of the Catuvellauni tribe, and Roman pottery and coins were discovered in the area. In medieval times, the town grew as a market settlement and was owned by prominent families, including the de Bohuns in the 12th and 13th centuries. One of its most notable historical landmarks is Danbury Palace, a former royal residence used by Tudor and Stuart monarchs as a retreat, though it eventually fell into disrepair.

The town expanded further in the 18th and 19th centuries, driven by local industries such as farming and brickmaking. The arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century also contributed to its growth. Today, Danbury retains much of its historic charm, with its village centre featuring several listed buildings and landmarks that showcase its long and varied history.
